What are the fitness trends to look out for in 2022?

Trends or fads? Well some things will come and go and I guess if they stay they're a trend rather than a fad!

So what can we expect to see in 2022 - it really depends on the survey you are reading but according to several the top five new fitness activities to look out for are:

- Weighted Hula Hoop

- ZUU (low impact bodyweight training)

- Stroller Fitness (er OK?!)

- Reverse Running (hmmmm really?)

- Trapeze Classes (ooo I'm sensing lots of shoulder injuries on this one!)

Do we see any of these fads surviving 2022? Well I think ZUU could and hula hoops are fun so they might stick around.

According to the American College of Sport and Medicine - they predict the following trends in the fitness industry for this year:

1. Wearable technology

2. Home exercise gyms

3. Outdoor activities

4. Strength training with free weights

5. Exercise for weight loss

6. Personal training

Obviously I am delighted that Personal Training is in the top 10 at number 6. Plus my services touch on the other top 5. For me this shows that post-lockdowns the shift is continuing towards a move away from the big corporate gyms and more towards working with a PT and setting up a home exercise set-up.

From talking with my clients (some of whom have a gym membership), they really appreciate and need the services of a PT to develop a fitness programme tailored to their needs They also benefit from the 1-2-1 tuition on correct exercise form and technique, which they may not be getting from their gym.

I think the main message that I'd like to put across is that if you are looking to make improvements to your health and fitness, then don't make it a quick fix - think long-term and the key to that is finding something you enjoy doing and consistently doing it.

Keep things varied - it not only makes life interesting, it is good to challenge the mind and body in different ways, in order to develop a good level of well-rounded fitness (which could include strength, cardio, flexibility, mobility and stability training).
