Barriers to starting a new fitness programme and how to overcome them

Many of my clients turn up feeling very apprehensive for their first PT session and this is totally understandable.

Starting a new exercise programme can be daunting for many reason. Often people who are trying to lose weight feel self-conscious and also disappointed in themselves for losing their fitness.

The task of getting fit can see pretty massive and the first few sessions quite challenging as they are coming to grips with new exercises and training equipment.

Here's how I help my clients overcome their apprehensions:

  • I set realistic goals to keep their focussed on why they've come to me for help and what they're trying to achieve.

  • I give lots of motivational talk and also help them to reconnect with their bodies and learn more about what their bodies can do.

  • I help them improve their lifestyle habits including diet so they have a holistic approach to fitness throughout their week.

  • I build them up slowly to avoid injury and boost confidence and body awareness.

  • I ensure that they warm-up properly and teach them good form and technique.

Remember, fitness is a lifestyle, not a short-term gain. Once you get over those initial hurdles and feel positive about the fitness journey you've started, everything starts to fall into place!
